I’m Latino, and I’m a scientist, a PhD student, and an incorrigible nerd who is fascinated by our planet’s awesome biodiversity, most of which remains to be discovered!
I enjoy thinking about a broad range of problems with an evolutionary lens and am a die hard Darwin fan. I got interested in evolution and biodiversity studies while completing my undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico. I had initially started down a pre-med path but eventually realized how much I enjoyed the basic research aspects of my biology classes. I also just had not made enough of a point of sitting down and asking myself what I wanted. I didn’t know where to begin. It was shortly thereafter that I got involved in a program intended to increase minority involvement in science at UNM. I was hooked. Thanks to this program I met mentors and other minority students interested in careers in science. During my pursuit of a career in science, I’ve come to appreciate just how much of science is not just about data, theory, and debate but also about people. The direction and course of science is indelibly linked to those included in science. I am interested in learning more about the social aspects of science and am committed to doing my part to make science more inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. |
